Shortgrass Library System ServicesThe Shortgrass Library System currently provides services to eleven southeastern Alberta municipalities:
Most core services are supported by an integrated library automation system and include: on-line public access catalogues and on-line circulation (all libraries); ordering, cataloguing and processing; management of the automation system and Shortgrass database. The Shortgrass database consists of over 300,000 bibliographic records, 500,000 items and provides the status of library materials available, circulating or on order as well. The Shortgrass database also includes holdings of contracted partners: Medicine Hat School District, and Prairie Rose Regional School District. Convenient borrowing/returning: You may borrow or return material at any Shortgrass member library. Materials available for your enjoyment include books for all categories of readers and reading, magazines, videos, cassettes, CDs, and more... Union catalogue: The Shortgrass union catalogue contains records of all catalogued materials in all member libraries. From this single source you will know if the title or information you require is available in a Shortgrass library.
- place holds on items while searching - search online resource databases from outside the library 24 hours per day and 7 days per week Using the Your Account tab to review your patron record option on main search screen - check to see what you have out and their return dates - renew items (can only renew items once from the internet) - cancel holds if no longer necessary - check your current address information Interlibrary loans: You can borrow many items not in our libraries by using interlibrary loans. Please contact your member library and your request can be forwarded to other libraries in Alberta, and if the material is still not located in Alberta, to libraries in other provinces and beyond. Reference/Information service: A reference and information service is provided by the Medicine Hat Public Library Reference Services Department. Online Databases Patrons can search other online databases for which Shortgrass has paid the subscription fee. These databases include many full text articles and index many newspapers and magazines. This is your opportunity to search "hidden" resources on the internet. To view the online databases go here. The Alberta Library Card Our patrons can use a TAL Library Card issued by a member library to borrow items at another participating Alberta Library. Some restrictions apply.
Shortgrass member libraries can only give TAL cards to residents of Shortgrass supporting municipalities -- sorry we cannot give TAL cards to residents of Duchess. Paperbacks by mail: This service offers popular titles to those without easy access to a member library. Registration forms are available at member libraries or from Shortgrass headquarters. Talking Books: Books on cassette which are available to patrons unable to read print because of a visual or physical handicap. Ask your librarian for more details.
Books in many languages: If your library does not have books in the language you require, your librarian can place a request for a selection of books in your preferred language.
Rotating block collections: Of large print books, videos, and special interest materials. These collections circulate among member libraries, and are intended to supplement their existing collections.
Other Libraries Contracting with Shortgrass Library System:
